A human rights lawyer has called for the prosecution of all those who diverted funds meant for arms purchase as over 25,000 ill-equipped soldiers and civilians lost their lives as a result.
A human rights lawyer and activist, Femi Falana has revealed how ex-National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki killed over 25,000 ill-equiped soldiers and many civilians with his looting spree by diverting about 2billion dollars meant for purchase of arms to fight Boko Haram insurgents.
Falana said Dasuki did a most wicked act by putting the lives of Nigerians in danger when it mattered most and wondered if the ex-NSA had a conscience.
He made this assertion while presenting a paper during the opening of the Amnesty International’s office in Abuja on Tuesday. Falana said hundreds of people were killed by Boko Haram due to lack of equipment by the army because Dasuki diverted the funds for personal use.
“By diverting the huge funds for arms procurement, the suspects deliberately caused the death of not less than 25,000 ill-equipped soldiers and unarmed civilians, including children.”“For committing such grave crimes against humanity, the suspects should be referred to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague for prosecution.”“I wrote to the then Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to demand an inventory of the arms bought with the $1bn loan. In her embarrassing reaction to my request, the minister stated that she was not in a position to account for the loan!“When I persisted in demanding transparency and accountability, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, claimed that the armed forces led by him lacked the equipment to fight the insurgents,” he said.
Falana insisted that all those found guilty of diverting funds meant for the purchase of arms for the fight against Boko Haram war, should be prosecuted by the International Criminal Court as he revealed the implications of Dasuki’s corrupt act.
